Keeping Morris County Strong: Doug Cabana’s Story

September 11, 2025

From Boonton Township to nearly three decades as a County Commissioner, Doug Cabana has built his career on one foundation: steady, reliable leadership that delivers results. His record is clear — protecting taxpayers, keeping Morris County safe, and building a stronger future for the next generation.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION IN PUBLIC SERVICE

Doug’s career in government began in Boonton Township, where he served for 11 years on the governing body, including six years as Mayor. During his tenure, he launched community programs such as the township’s D.A.R.E. initiative to keep kids safe, and he earned a reputation for responsible fiscal management. These years gave him a first-hand understanding of the challenges families and local governments face, and the importance of practical solutions over politics.

LEADING MORRIS COUNTY WITH EXPERIENCE AND RESULTS

In 1997, Doug was elected to the Morris County Board of Commissioners (formerly the Board of Freeholders), where he has been re-elected ever since — making him the longest-serving Commissioner in county history. He has guided the Board through changing times, serving multiple terms as both Director and Deputy Director. In 2006, he was elected President of the New Jersey Association of Counties, where he championed shared services and efficiency reforms that saved taxpayers across the state millions of dollars.

DELIVERING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AND STRONG SERVICES

Under Doug’s leadership, Morris County has held the county tax rate flat for six consecutive years, while maintaining the county’s AAA bond rating for a record 50 straight years. Doug believes government should live within its means while still delivering the services residents count on. He has overseen budgets that expand public safety funding, support vulnerable residents through programs like “Hope One” and “Navigating Hope,” and invest in the county’s infrastructure without raising taxes.

INVESTING IN EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE & PARKS

Doug has been a strong supporter of the County College of Morris and the Morris County Vocational School District, including the expansion of workforce training programs and the creation of a new Health Professions Center. He has prioritized road and bridge projects to keep communities connected, and supported the preservation of over 20,000 acres of parkland across Morris County, ensuring families can enjoy open space for generations to come.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Looking ahead, Doug’s mission is simple: to keep Morris County safe, strong, and affordable. That means holding the line on taxes, modernizing emergency services, expanding human service programs, and ensuring our county remains one of the best places in America to live, work, and raise a family. For Doug, leadership is not about titles — it’s about results, trust, and accountability.
